Best Pimm’s Cup Recipes for Wimbledon

Wimbledon is nearly upon us, and in keeping with Great British tradition, the nation will be snacking on strawberries and fresh cream and sipping on a Pimm’s Cup. The Wimbledon website averages a total of 28,000 KG of strawberries and 10,000 litres of fresh cream will be consumed at the event alone, alongside 320,000 Pimm’s Cups.

The Pimm’s Cup dates back to the early 1830’s created by James Pimm to serve to the customers of his oyster bar in London. The tonic was originally conceived to help aid digestion and served in a small tankard known as a No. 1 cup, from which it takes its name. There have been 6 variations over the years, with the alcohol being the only ingredient to change: gin (the original), scotch whisky, brandy, rum, rye whisky and vodka. So what does Pimm’s taste like? Anyone for Pimm’s describes the indisputable taste of Pimm’s No. 1 as coming from infusing lots of lovely gin with herbal botanicals, caramelised orange and delicate spices.

If you’ve ever wondered why Pimm’s is so popular at Wimbledon, it is believed that the first Pimms bar opened at The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament in 1971. It has been one of two drinks of choice at the tournament ever since, the other being champagne!
